Spaulding-Zoo Partnership

A Legacy of Wildlife Conservation

Ruth E. Spaulding looked to the Cincinnati Zoo as a place to honor her family, which she did several times after her husband’s passing in 1964. Among them, a wonderful gift brought Pygmy hippos to the Zoo, the result of her concern for species at the risk of extinction.

In 1983, Ruth’s amazing gift supported expansion of the Children’s Zoo, and was the largest single gift in the Zoo’s history. She said it was time to turn the petting zoo into something special. Her gift, made as a tribute for her beloved son and his love of animals, brought educational innovation, hands-on wildlife experiences, and Zoo Babies to generations of children.

The Spaulding Foundation has ensured that Ruth’s love and support of the Cincinnati Zoo continues. With an enduring connection and generous gifts about every two years, the Foundation has provided essential funding for important Zoo projects. The Spaulding-Zoo Partnership has been instrumental in creating the Zoo’s culture of excellence.
